A silk chiffon scarf is primarily made of fine silk threads that are woven tightly together to resemble netting. It is a slippery fabric with a pretty shimmer and shine, which makes it perfect for formal or dressy occasions. Chiffon’s that are made from cotton or polyester fibers tend to not shine as much, and are also a lot less pliable because they are heavier than silk. Synthetic fibers are now being produced that can be woven into a beautiful chiffon scarf. Synthetics are almost identical to silken threads, except that they are less expensive, and hold dyes better than natural fabrics. However, because the synthetic threads are also so tiny and delicate, they also require special care.
A chiffon scarf has specific washing instructions no matter what type of fibers it is made out of. Silk materials must be dry cleaned only, and by a reputable cleaner. If your silken wrap also has embroidery or beading, you want to make sure that the cleaner will guarantee your item in case of damage. A chiffon scarf made from a synthetic material can be washed by hand. The best way to do this is in the bathroom sink. Using cold to lukewarm water and a detergent specially made for delicate fabric immerse your wrap for a few minutes and swirl around then gently rinse out all of the detergent. If your material contains bright patterns, always use cold water to prevent colors from bleeding into one another. All other fabrics except for silks can be hand washed as well. When drying and pressing your chiffon scarf, you need to take special precautions as well. Always lay your wrap flat to dry. A great idea is to lay a bath towel on your bed and then lay your wrap flat upon the towel. To press wrinkles or creases out of your chiffon scarf on your own, use a delicate or silk setting on your iron. It is a good idea to lay a thin kitchen towel over your item to protect it. You can also use a steamer, but be careful not to get water droplets on the fabric; they can be very difficult to get out of finer fabrics. Again, if in doubt, you can always take your item to the cleaners to be both cleaned and pressed.
