Tips on the Proper Care of a Cashmere Scarf
Cashmere is a type of wool that comes from the downy winter coat of the wool goat. If you've ever owned or touched one of these accessories, then you know that the softness and luxuriousness of this natural fiber is second to none.
This is why it is why they are more expensive than other types of scarfs. So, if you have started collecting these, then it is a must for you to know the proper ways to care for it to protect your investment.
Some people hesitate to buy clothing and other products made of this super soft material because they think it’s too hard to clean because the fiber is too delicate. While it is true that cashmere is delicate (note: be very careful cleaning these), caring for it is easier and simpler than most people think.
For starters, it’s important to point out that the softness depends on the percentage of wool it has. You can care for two cashmere scarves the same way but find that one is softer than the other. The care label of the scarf will tell you how many percent of cashmere the scarf is made of.
The cashmere scarf made of a higher percentage of cashmere are going to be softer. Also, cashmere scarves with lighter colors are softer than those that are heavily-dyed. In addition, the material becomes softer the more times it is washed. (If done properly!)
To clean a cashmere scarf:Note: we highly recommend having it dry cleaned. However, if you wish to clean it yourself, here is what recommend below. There are only a few basic guidelines to keep in mind. The first is to hand wash the scarf. Although some garments made of cashmere can be dry cleaned, make sure the care label of your scarf indicates this before choosing this option. Also, never... ever... put any cashmere item in the washer or that will be the end of your precious accessory.
When hand washing your scarf, use lukewarm water and MILD Woolite. Warm water should also be used for rinsing. Afterwards, do not wring the scarf or twist it to remove the water! This will distort the fibers.
What you should do instead is roll the cashmere scarf in a soft towel and gently squeeze. When the towel is soaked with water, replace it with another one until you’ve extracted all excess water from the scarf. Then, lay the scarf on a fresh towel until it has dried completely.
Do not hang the scarf up to dry because this tends to stretch the fabric and causes it to lose shape. The same rule applies when it’s time to store your garment. Wet or dry, hanging up cashmere affects its form so the best way to store your scarf is to just fold it and place it somewhere flat, ideally in your dresser drawer.
Aside from making sure to wash your scarf before storing it away, you can also place lavender sachets or cedar chips inside your drawer or storage box to keep away moths. Proper washing and storage is just one part. Although a very important part in caring for your cashmere scarf.
It is recommended though that you put on makeup and apply other products like deodorant, hairspray and perfume and allow them to dry completely before getting dressed.
Ways on how to tie a cashmere shawl...as part of evening wear, you can drape the shawl round your shoulders and let the ends fall on your back. This is especially ideal if you are wearing a formal dress. The ends of the shawl can also be tied on the back for a truly chic look.
When all is said and done: how to tie shawl is really a matter of personal preference. It can be used for both formal and informal occasions. In addition, it does not have to cease being part of your clothing during summer – this accessory has many other uses other than simply keeping you warm.
